Run for their life’s

As some of you may know for the last few years I have been trying to secure a place in the Flora London Marathon, well my time has come, confirmation dropped on my mat Saturday morning, the 2009 race is on Sunday 26th April. Most people think at the age of 49 having run one marathon previously, that I am completely mad. I must admit knowing the training that I had to do last time, the injuries I received and the thought of those last six miles together with the pain afterwards, I could barely walk for 24 hours, I tend to agree with them. Unfortunately I am not as fit as I was three years ago at least 1/2 stone heavier so this is going to be a long hard slog for me, but for me it’s a must do before I die quest. Not just for myself I also want to help other people I have therefore decided to run the marathon and to raise as much money as I can for two children’s charities that are dear to my heart.

Training week 9 - 10

Another tough couple of weeks just can’t seem to get the motivation, too many Christmas parties, late nights and Christmas puddings. Only run a handful of times over the last two weeks. Intend running 12 miles on the 29th and training in earnest from then on, watch this space.

Training Week 7 - 8

Getting out of the shower, stubbed my toe, couldn’t walk properly for a day, toe nice and black. Still managed to run on Saturday Its been a tough couple of weeks trying to find the time to run is hard, what with Christmas just around the corner all that turkey and Christmas pudding to look forward to, this is turning into a film (Run fat boy run). Oh well must plod on.

Training week 4

Didn’t run Saturday raining hard hung over from firework night celebrations. Went to go for a run Tuesday lunchtime forgot tee shirt. Actually made the first run of the week on Wednesday, still felt quite good, had to laugh coming back by the Tower of London a young lady in a short black skirt and high heels started running with me trying to interview me, something about fitness in the city even had a cameraman running in front trying to take a picture, she was a bit incoherent though, soon got out of breath and gave up. So young lady if ever you land on this page please tell me what it was all about, how bizarre.

Training week 3

Have sorted out a training plan its basically 23 weeks long and means that I will be running approx 500 miles in training, oh joy!


Monday –Ouch that hurt Shadwell Basin but my legs felt like lead.

Wednesday- Much better nice and easy felt fine.

Saturday Run from Gravesend to Higham, when I turned around to run back, noticed a young lady out jogging who gave me a nice smile as she passed after running back for a couple of minutes looked over my shoulder and noticed she was doing the same run and had also turned back, so slowed up so she could catch up, very soon she did, ran straight past crossed the road and that was the last I saw of her. Last time I slow down, thought I might have had a running partner there ; - ) the loneliness of the long distance runner.

Training week 2

Monday: Richard is keeping up the hard core training regime, he just seemed to run off, I am sure he knows what he’s doing, he’s a great trainer.

Wednesday: I am sure this is working, started my training run and off he went, this is great, still feeling tired and slightly out of breath.

Bloody disaster! Richard the trainer fell off a climbing wall last night, I have never seen such bruising in my life, although its not broken it looks like he’s got a black sock on, not sure what Iam going to do without my trainer.

Went for a 6 mile run on Saturday, dropped my daughter off at dancing, iPod on shuffle and off I went, nice easy pace, weather was great, remember why I used to enjoy running so much.

Training Day two

The hill just got steeper; Richard stopped messing about and left me on the way there as apposed to on the way back. Not sure how his coaching technique works but I’m sure he has it all worked out, Going to try and keep this blog up to date so will change it to Training Weeks as apposed to days.

Training Day One

Well – got a steep hill to climb Richard (work friend now personal trainer) well at least up to the 10k mark as he refuses to go past that distance took me out for a run from King William Street to Shadwell Basin 4.2 miles. Now, going back I introduced Richard to running during lunch time about 5 years ago and he’s first runs consisted of running walking running – now I can’t keep up with him, managed to stay with him until just after tobacco dock on the return so my first task over the next 6 weeks is to keep him in my site until the end of the run. Felt quite out of breadth so had to slow up. Its going to be a tough 6 months.

The journey begins

CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA.
In February 1987, Paul O’Gorman died of leukaemia at the age of fourteen. Just nine months later, another devastating blow struck the O’Gorman family when Paul’s sister, Jean, was also lost to cancer.
Always a caring boy, Paul had made his parents promise to help other children with leukaemia and, within weeks of his death, they started fundraising. In November 1987, just days after Jean’s death, they met Diana, Princess of Wales. Deeply moved by the double tragedy, she personally helped establish and inaugurate this charity in January 1988.
What started as a small memorial charity is now the UK’s leading national charity dedicated to the conquest of childhood leukaemia through pioneering research, new treatment and support of leukaemic children and their families. Paul’s indomitable spirit continues to inspire the work of CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA.


The Friends of Craylands School the Friends support a local primary school where I live and raise money that is used to purchase play equipment and provide financial support for the not so well off children who would otherwise miss out on school trips etc. The friends play a vital part in the school community.
